Bolster cushion

Back story

Tom was helping me clear out my studio/office room not too long ago. He very innocently asked “What’s in this bag?” while lifting a white sack that rustled gently.

I could not stop laughing and tried to speak several times, before I eventually got out “Buckwheat husks”. I sheepishly explained that I’d got them to make myself a bolster cushion for home yoga. He started laughing and replied “This is the most Leah thing you’ve said in ages”

Yes, apparently I am someone who buys a bag of buckwheat husks because I got excited about making a yoga cushion, then still hadn’t actually made it 2 years later.

The conversation and clear out (and maybe a little embarrasment) fired me up to make it over a weekend.

Making the cushion

The bolster is a total stash buster project. The inner cushion is made from a light-midweight cotton, filled with buckwheat husks (~4kg) and wool fibre filling. Outer cushion is mid-heavyweight material โ€“ I don’t know the fibre content.

The outer cushion measures about 15cm x 30cm x 60cm. Inner cushion was about 2.5cm larger but not overfilled so I could actually get it in. Design is a rough copy of this Ekotex Yoga bolster. I drafted the pattern myself, so mine ended up more like a rounded rectangle, than a oval shape.

Total making time from pattern to finished cushion was about 10 hours. Material costs probably end up a little less than the shop version. It is definitely quicker to buy than make, but I guess less satisfying?! I’m pleased I finished it finally because now I have a robust, basically bean bag, bolster cushion for lying and sitting on.
